Jon tackles FreeNAS

Following on from our discussion last meeting about personal clouds and servers, I have decided to install FreeNAS on a box at home to provide file sharing and media streaming services. It installed without a hitch and seems a pretty polished piece of software. However, its based in FreeBSD, and my limited knowledge of working with non-Debian linux is holding me back every time I need to do something on the command line.

Acer upgrade, Alpha server and Solwise plug

Tony upgraded the memory on his early Acer Aspire one netbook. You have to completely dismantle the netbook, so it is not a job for the faint hearted! From meetings From meetings From meetings More details on his Blog: http://tony-hughes.blogspot.com/2011/12/acer-aspireone-ram-upgrade.html We have been trying to get Gentoo onto the DEC Alpha server,(See earler DEC Alpha posts) but the system crashed during the kernel compilation stage. The problem was probably lack of memory for the compilation process.

DEC Alpha server, phone tethering and the Solwise plug.

Donald’s project to put Gentoo on the DEC Alpha server took another step forward. The Gentoo kernel has been downloaded, and compilation started. The kernel compile stage was still running at the end of our 2 hour meeting, so it was left to run over the weekend. Unfortunately, on my return on Monday morning, the process had not finished, but had ‘crashed’. Lack of memory is believed to be the cause.

Blogging, phone tethering and DEC Alpha server

Tony set up a google blogger blogspot account, and intends to start blogging. The address is http://tony-hughes.blogspot.com/2011/11/my-first-post-what-is-this-blog-about.html Jon has a laptop that dual boots Ubuntu and windows 7. Jon has tethered windows 7 to his phone in order to get internet access while he is ‘out and about’, and wanted to do the same in Ubuntu. The initial attempt failed. When it is working, the method used will be posted here.

Solwise plug as backup internet provision.

We have covered the little Solwise plug several times already:- [](http://blackpoollug.blogspot.com/2010/11/meeting-solwise-net-3g-3g11nmrw-35g.html) and this week we decided to try and implement the mode where it falls back to 3g internet provision via a dongle if the wired network fails. It took a couple of hours for Jon to get it working, but eventually, it worked as planned, and was able to switch to the dongle if the wired network went off, and switch back if it came back on.

DEC Alpha and other servers

Tony and Les started to set up a (campfire?) server on a Lenovo dual core provided by Tony. Aaron remastered a live CD to use as a client to the server. Donald brought a DEC Alpha server in, with the intention of putting Linux on it. The Debian Alpha port is apparently no longer supported, but the Gentoo port is still supported, so the intention is to use Gentoo. See how we get on next week.
