Meeting - ubuntu quickly software development + Jolicloud

This week, Les, Tony, Colin, Peter and Mike. Coffee supplied by Colin, Blueberry muffins courtesy of Tony. Mince pies on the menu for next week. The first half of the meeting was general Linux chitchat, then we moved on to look at Jolicloud in a virtual machine, then on a netbook. Quickly is to be an ongoing project, in the projects section. Finally, Colin has still not achieved his objective with Tiny/Microcore Linux on the ancient IBM thinkpad, so decided to take a free Toshiba to experiment on.

O’Reilly Media announces Global Ignite Week 2011. From February 7-11, over 100 cities will host community-powered Ignite events attended by upwards of 12,000 technologists, entrepreneurs, DIYers, and creative professionals on at least six continents. Participating cities in our area include Amsterdam, Bristol, Brussels, Bucharest, Lisbon, Oporto, Paris and Warsaw. Global Ignite Week happens online as well as in person, which makes Ignite talks available to the whole world. Meeting - Solwise NET-3G-3G11nMRW 3.5G

Jon brought in his Solwise NET-3G-3G11nMRW 3.5G, which is apparently available for the knock down price of £34. Link to Solwise 3G router This wall/desk mounted router accesses the internet using the USB dongle supplied by your mobile service provider. The service is then available to share via Ethernet or the integrated 802.11n Access Point. A Fail-Back mode is available to automatically back up a fixed internet connection when that service is interrupted.

App Engine is a service provided by Google, which serves as hosting for web applications. As Google are experts in the field of scalable web applications, they provide an environment and the technology required to create applications that can scale to a large number of users. The service is currently in preview stages but it still provides a very stable working environment. With a free account there are certain quotas (database storage, bandwidth, etc…) that your application must adhere to.
